Steel processor Laura Metaal invests in an improvement of the decoiling lines for their Steelcenter in Maastricht (The Netherlands). Laura Metaal is Europe’s market leader in producing steel sheets with high yield strengths in any desired size. Due to their wide product range and high flexibility, the decoiler has clients within a 1000-kilometre radius. The investment of 5 million Euros suits their ambition to optimally respond to market demands in the long term. After a year of preparation, the new machines will be operational in the second quarter of 2017.
Higher yield strengths and sheet thicknesses
With this investment, Laura Metaal can produce steel sheets that combine higher sheet thicknesses with improved yield strengths. For example, with sheets with a 25 mm gauge, a S700 quality can be processed, whereas the yield strength was previously limited to S355 quality. Wear resistant steels (up until 16 mm gauge) can be processed with yield strenghts of 1100 MPa. The ability to process these combinations of sheet thicknesses and yield strengths is unique in Europe.
Enabling lighter constructions
The demand for high strength steel is on the rise. With the new machines, Laura Metaal is able to meet these market demands. Commercial Director Pieter Haumann explains: “The stronger you can make steel, the less steel you need to build a certain construction, enabling lighter constructions. With trucks, for example, this lowers fuel consumption, which leads to a reduction in CO2 emission. Moreover, lighter trucks provide more loading weight, reducing the number of rides. We think it is important to continuously innovate and invest to contribute to the world around us.”
Clean and smooth materials
Another advantage of the investment is that it guarantees the most clean and smooth steel sheets. Even humid coils can be processed immediately without having the risk of negative effects on the material quality. In addition, Laura Metaal is able to apply side trimming, pickling and oiling to almost all steel sheets.
With the new investment, Laura Metaal is able to operate with even more flexibility than before. As Pieter Haumann points out: “We supply any desired volumes and adjust lead times to our client’s requests. Delivering what, when and how our client desires, that’s our starting point. ‘No’ is not an option for us. With these new machines, we extend our range of sizes and yield strengths even further and are able to meet clients’ demands even better.”
